Stained Glass Windows

The stained glass windows on the north side of the church tell the life of

St Augustine:-

St Augustine was the Prior of a Benedictine Monastery in Rome.

Pope Gregory the Great saw children from England for sale as slaves in

the market place in Rome and this sparked his interest in a mission.

Pope Gregory chose Augustine to lead the mission with a number of his

monastic brothers.

Augustine had heard terrible stories about the English and made slow

progress, but eventually he sailed for England.

Augustine landed at the Isle of Thanet and travelled to see King Ethelbehrt

and his Christian wife Queen Bertha.

Augustine preached to the people of England.

Augustine baptised Ethelbehrt and many thousands of people on

Christmas day 597.

Augustine became Archbishop of Canterbury and received a Palium from

the Pope.

Augustine was a wise spiritual leader of the English people.

Augustine consecrated Lawrence as the next Archbishop of Canterbury.

Augustine died on the 26th May 604 and was buried in Canterbury.
