Weddings

We warmly welcome couples who want to get married.  You should be aware of the law regarding marriage, please read the legal requirements below carefully.

Firstly

To get married at St Augustine's one of you should live in the parish.  You can check which parish you live in by putting your postcode into this web site. Check your parish click here  You should approach the parish in which you live for marriage.  There is one exception to this legal requirement and that is for people who are members of St Augustine's electoral roll.  Only those who have attended St Augustine's habitually for the preceding six months can apply to be placed on the electoral roll which is revised each year in April.

Secondly

You should both be UK citizens.  If one of you is not a UK citizen you will need a special licence and to obtain this licence you will need to satisfy the priest that you wish to marry for genuine reasons and that you are not attempting to avoid immigration controls.  If either of you does not have a valid passport or is subject to immigration control you will probably not be able to get married in church.  Please respect the fact that for Christians marriage is a sacrament which should not be entered into for anything less than pure motives.

Thirdly

Both of you should not have been married before.  If one or both of you have been married before then a marriage is entirely at the discretion of the parish priest.  The Church of England has guidelines which the priests are expected to follow.  You should be prepared to have a frank conversation regarding the circumstances surrounding the breakdown of your former marriage and that your current partner was not involved in your divorce.  You will also have to show the priest the decree absolute ending your previous marriage.

Fourthly

If having read the above you would like to proceed with an application to get married you should come to church on a Sunday morning at 10.00am and see the priest afterwards.
